Matilde was a powerful feudal lord, countess, duchess, marquise and medieval queen. An ardent supporter of the papacy in the Investiture Controversy; an absolute leading figure in an era in which women were considered of lower rank, she came to dominate all the Italian territories north of the Papal State.
The Grand Countess (magna comitissa) Matilde is certainly one of the most important and interesting figures of the Italian Middle Ages: lived in a period of constant battles, intrigues and excommunications, she was able to demonstrate extraordinary strength, also enduring great pain and humiliation, showing an innate leadership aptitude. Her faith in the Church of her time earned her the admiration and deep love of all her subjects.
