Guide Title

Sardinia, Italy

Guide

Sardinia is a place where, thanks to favorable environmental conditions, many species of animals live, especially birds. Many areas of this beautiful island have been recognized Sites of Community Interest of the European Union as there are about 330 species of birds, some migrating and observable only in some periods of the year, other permanent.

Observing these animals in their natural environment is a real show that every year attracts numerous Birdwatching lovers, simply equipped with trekking shoes, telescope and a guide for the recognition of various species.

The birds of Sardinia

The area of Capo Falcone and the island of Asinara are among the most interesting in Sardinia and also in Italy from the point of view of the avifera fauna. In particular the Asinara for its morphology and its protected territory in which the presence of man has always been minimal due to historical reasons, is an ideal habitat for many species. A study, carried out by the Department of Animal Biology of the University of Sassari, was able to ascertain the presence of 147 species, both permanent and migratory. The importance of Sardinian avifauna is also highlighted by the fact that the island hosts large breeding populations of rare and localized species: about 20,000 pairs of Phoenicopterus roseus in 2015 (90% of the Italian population) in the Molentargius Park; about 2,000 breeding pairs of rosy seagull Chroicocephalus genei in the same Park; over 600 Polli sultani.
