The fortress of Aci Castello, built in dark volcanic stone, stands on a rock spur overlooking the sea. The unique feature of this manor is the basaltic cliff on which it was built.
Aci Castello is the first center of the Riviera dei Ciclopi, so called for the rocks that emerge from the sea and which seem to have been thrown by a giant; legend has it that it was the blinded Polyphemus who threw them at Ulysses on the run. The only remaining access to the castle is a masonry staircase at the end of which you will admire the quadrangular tower, the Byzantine chapel and the terrace overlooking the gulf.
