Owned by the state only since 1986, the Villa dei Quintili was the largest and most sumptuous residence in the Roman suburb.
It is the largest suburban villa in Rome, located on the fifth mile of the Via Appia, in an area where according to tradition the battle between the Horatii and the Curiazi took place. The villa belonged to the two brothers Sesto Quintilio Condiano and Sesto Quintilio Valerio Massimo, important personalities of the time of Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius, consuls in 151 AD. The current entrance to the villa is located on Via Appia Nuova, where an Antiquarium is set up. On the side towards the Appian Way the remains of a monumental nymphaeum can be seen, transformed into a castle in the Middle Ages, and which was the original entrance to the villa. The monumental complex overlooks the Roman countryside in terraces and offers a panorama that has inspired many famous artists over time.
