Michelangelo Merisi, Caravaggio, is one of the most famous Italian painters of all time, recognised of universal fame only in the twentieth century.
His paintings, which combine an analysis of the human state, both physical, and emotional, with a dramatic use of light, had a strong formative influence on the Baroque painting. He was sentenced to death after a murder during a brawl. After being judged to death he spent his life trying to escape his destiny.
