The building itself is a sculpture that seems to defy the laws of gravity with sinuous walls of stainless steel that evoke the image of a sailing ship in a stormy sea. The project, chosen from 72 proposals, cost over 270 million dollars and began in 1991 to be completed in 2003 after some interruptions due to lack of funds: its completion was made possible by the substantial contributions of the Walt family Disney and the Walt Disney Company along with private donations.
