Qasr El Nil Bridge (originally called Khedive Ismail Bridge), also commonly known as Kasr El Nil Bridge, is a historic structure dating back to 1931 and replaced the first bridge to cross the Nile River in downtown Cairo. It connects Tahrir Square in central Cairo to the modern Cairo Opera complex towards the southern tip of Gezira Island. At the east and west approaches of the bridge are four famous large bronze lion statues; they are late 19th century works by Henri Alfred Jacquemart, French sculptor and animalier. The new, wider 6th of October Bridge parallels its path 0.8 kilometers (0.50 mi) just north.
