The stairway of Caltagirone, made up of 142 steps, and known as the staircase of Santa Maria del Monte, represents the distinctive and characterizing feature of the city: the glance and the amazement for the visitor who, unaware, reaches its feet is assured . Each step is different from the other.
Watch this staircase light up every year, on July 24th and 25th (for the feast of San Giacomo, patron saint of the city), by thousands of small candles. Since on this occasion all forms of electric lighting are interrupted, the resulting visual result is a lava flow, a river of fire which in its pulsating luminosity designs elegant decorative figures, the result of the skill of a master builder, under whose orders they work several dozen workers in the arrangement of the lamps. To form the unique tapestry of fire is a set of four thousand lanterns called "lumere".
