Necropoli Rupestri di Pantalica

Necropolis Sicily, Italy

Necropoli Rupestri di Pantalica

Explore the scenic necropolis consisting of about 5000 cave tombs carved into the natural rock and the Anaktoron (Prince's Palace), positioned on the top of the hill, which recalls the grandeur of the Mycenaean palaces.

Pantalica was a settlement located on a plateau of the Iblei Mountains where the inhabitants of the coastal strip found refuge forced to flee due to the arrival of the Sicilians and the Italic populations in the first half of the XIII century BC. Prehistoric graves are excavated on all sides of the plateau. Some overhanging, almost giving the impression of a beehive.
