The Castle of Carpineti has always been one of the founding elements of Matilde di Canossa's fortified system. It was so important that when Matilde, in 1077, decided to host Pope Gregory VII after the famous meeting in Canossa with Emperor Henry IV, she chose Carpineti which, precisely because of the presence of the Pope, was called with a certain emphasis "the new Rome".
In 1082 it hosted the Bishop of Lucca, S. Anselmo and later the popes Urban II and Pasquale II. In 1092 the assembly of bishops, prelates and monks took place here which decided the continuation of the war against Henry IV. After Matilde's death, her feud fell apart and Carpineti too had to undergo numerous changes of ownership and destruction. Among its rulers, the personality of Domenico Amorotto stands out, an adventurer, thief and assassin but also well integrated in the local political games, who dominated the Reggio mountains for a long time in the sixteenth century.
