Fira is the capital of the island of Santorini, and here too you can find the typical white buildings with a blue dome. The name derives from a different pronunciation of Θήρα ([ˈthɛːra] now pronounced [ˈθira]), the name of the island in ancient Greek, but another version would refer to the adjective fyrros, which in the island's dialect means reddish. Fira is located at an altitude of 260 meters on the top of a rock that drops sheer to the sea, from which the caldera of the Thera volcano and also a good part of the island can be admired.
