Akrotiri, whose name means promontory, was an important port city dating back to the Bronze Age, located on the island of Thera now known as Santorini. The city was completely buried in 1628 BC. due to a volcanic eruption, and brought to light only in 1967 thanks to the excavations of the archaeologist Spyridon Marinatos. Thanks to the deposit of volcanic ash on the city, houses of the time, frescoes and ceramics have been preserved, and it is for this reason that it is also known as the Pompei of the Aegean.
