The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge that spans the Golden Gate, the strait that connects the Pacific Ocean with the San Francisco Bay. The construction of the bridge was completed in 1937, and today it has a length of 2.71 km and a height of 230 meters. It connects San Francisco, on the northern tip of the peninsula of the same name, with the southern part of Marin County. As the only way north out of the city, the bridge is part of both the U.S. Route 101, both California State Route 1 and approximately 100,000 vehicles pass on it in a typical day.
Construction began in 1933, and it took four challenging years but on May 27th, 1937 the bridge was inaugurated. Just like the first people that walked there, you will live an incredible experience at 746 feet high. You will be surrounded by a magical atmosphere walking in this modern engineering work of art. Its distinctive orange color and art deco style make this bridge one of the most important symbols of San Francisco. It will take you one hour to walk this bridge across its 1.7 miles. You will live a unique experience in a human-made creation that is considered to be one of the seven modern wonders.
