Moving from Piazza Sant'Oronzo in the direction of the Duomo, you come across the Church of Sant'Irene, recently refurbished and now admirable in all its splendour.
It suddenly appears in front of the eyes of tourists along the road and was completed at the beginning of the seventeenth century, when Santa Irene was still the patron saint of the city (later the cult of the patron passed in favor of Sant'Oronzo). At the top, in fact - in a frame - the symbol of Lecce is enclosed and the engraving "Irene virgini et martiri" is clearly visible and in the center the engraving "Lupiensium Patronae". The altars and frescoes inside along the single nave in the cross plan are wonderful. Connected to the Church of Sant'Irene there is the Convento dei Teatini, today no longer a convent but the site of numerous music-theatrical initiatives and a rich antiques market.
