The imposing residential complex known as Villa di Massenzio is located on the third mile of the Via Appia and consists of three main monuments: the palace, the circus and the dynastic mausoleum, also known as the "Tomb of Romulus".
These three monuments were designed in an inseparable architectural unity to celebrate the Emperor Maxentius, the unfortunate opponent of Constantine the Great in the battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312 AD. The best known monument of the whole complex is the circus, the only one of the Roman circuses still well preserved in all its architectural components.
