The square was built in the mid-1500s to provide a grand entrance to what was, at the time, the main entrance to the city of Rome. The obelisk in the center was brought by Augustus from ancient Egypt. In its southern part we find the twin churches of Santa Maria dei Miracoli and the Church of Santa Maria a Montesanto. Opposite the two churches is the Porta del Popolo, a work created by Bernini. To the east we find the climb to get to the terrace of the Pincio.
