The most important basilica in the Christian world, its beauty manages to bring together the faithful and art lovers in one place. Dedicated to Peter, first among the Apostles, first Pope and head of the Church, it was built right where the apostle was killed and then buried.
Bramante was the first architect, Bernini designed the staircase, Maderno built the facade, but the real masterpiece of St. Peter's basilica is the dome designed by Michelangelo, enormous in size and with a great scenographic effect. The result of a construction site that lasted almost 200 years is an imposing basilica, majestic and of incomparable beauty. Around the church the grandiose colonnade, the work of Bernini, encloses the elliptical square, created to accommodate huge crowds of the faithful, in a spectacular and metaphorical embrace of all Christianity. Seen from the foci of the ellipse, the double columns of the portico create an absolutely surprising perspective effect, aligning themselves perfectly until they appear as a single column.
