In the first decades of the eighteenth century, the bishopric decided to demolish and then rebuild the medieval cathedral of Ravenna from scratch. The building housed many art objects belonging to the previous early Christian cathedral, built when the capital of the Roman Empire was transferred from Milan. The mosaics, epigraphs, capitals and tombstones were removed. Archbishop Maffeo Nicolò Farsetti (1727-1741) decided not to relocate them to the new church, but to collect them in a special place. After a few years of closure, the Museum was reopened in 2010 following a series of structural and plant engineering interventions which ensured a new exhibition layout.
