Fascinating and dark place, in the past it was the site of famous executions, including that of Anna Bolena. This castle, made up of 22 towers, was built during the reign of William the Conqueror (1066-87) and over the centuries has hosted numerous functions: royal residence, observatory, warehouse, mint, but above all a prison.
Today it is possible to visit the interior of the complex, where there is a collection of armor and the famous crown jewels, in the Waterloo Barracks. The tour led by the Yeomen Warders, better known by the nickname of Beefeaters, or the guardians of the Tower, is not to be missed. The guided tour departs from the Middle Tower every half hour. Three ceremonies are held each day: - Opening ceremony, at 9 in the morning; - Ceremony of the Word, at 3.45 pm at the Waterloo Barraks; - Ceremony of the Keys, from 21.53 to 22. One of the peculiarities of the Tower of London is the presence of ravens. According to an ancient legend, if the ravens had left the Tower, the monarchy and the entire kingdom of England would have fallen. The presence of at least six specimens is guaranteed, as these have been clipped to prevent them from flying away.
