Designed by Richard Rogers for one of the largest insurance companies in the world, it is often referred to as the Inside-Out Building. Built between 1978 and 1986, it is still one of the most futuristic buildings in the city today, with its external elevators and gleaming metal shell.
The project recalls that of the Center Pompidou, designed by Rogers with Renzo Piano in 1978, emphasizing the concepts of flexibility and continuous space. All the spaces and service elements such as lifts, stairs, bathrooms and machine rooms are grouped in service towers, located outside the body of the building. In 2011 Lloyd's Building was designated a Grade I listed building, the most recent building ever to be granted that status.
