The Elizabeth Tower, commonly referred to as Big Ben, is one of London's iconic monuments. Technically, Big Ben is the name of the Great Bell, the massive bell that sits inside the clock tower.
The Palace of Westminster was destroyed by fire in 1834. In 1844 it was decided that the new building of the Houses of Parliament should include a clock tower. The first stroke of Big Ben rang in Westminster on May 31, 1859, and the clock has rarely stopped since. Even after a bomb destroyed the House of Commons during World War II, Big Ben continued to strike the hour. At night when the four dials are illuminated, the clock tower offers a stunning sight.
