The island of Garda, also known as the Swabian island of Federico I Hohenstaufen known as Barbarossa, is the largest island of the homonymous lake. Just over 200 meters from Capo San Fermo, a promontory that divides the gulf of Salò from the Emerald bay, it measures approximately one kilometer in length and is on average 600 meters wide. Near the island is the rock from the Altar, so called because it is said that once a year a mass was celebrated on it which was attended by fishermen from all over the lake on board their boats.
