Rio de Janeiro Carnival (or simply Rio Carnival) is an annual celebration held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's second largest city. This is twinned with the Carnival of Europe in Cento. The Rio Carnival is considered one of the most famous in Brazil and around the world due to the magnificence and richness of the festivities.
The festivities culminate on Shrove Thursday and Shrove Tuesday, which is the last day of carnival, since the following day is Ash Wednesday, with which the 40 days of fasting of Lent begin. Brazil is a nation with a Catholic majority, so Lenten abstinence is deeply felt. Carnival represents a "farewell" to the pleasures of the flesh for the next 40 days. The Carnival presents some variations with the European counterpart and differs in the Brazilian territory.
