«Are they stones or are they clouds? Are they real or is it a dream?” The Dolomites, also known as the Pale Mountains (Dolomiten in German, Dolomites in Ladin, Dolomitis in Friulian), are a group of mountain ranges in the Italian Eastern Alps, south of the main Alpine chain, between Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli, between the provinces of Belluno, Bolzano, Trento, Udine and Pordenone. On 26 June 2009, the Executive Committee of the Convention on the Material Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO, meeting in Seville, declared the Dolomites a World Heritage Site.
