Hell's Gate or also called Darvaza is a crater located in the Karakum Desert, Turkmenistan, about 260 km north of Ashgabat. Locals and travelers call it "The Gate to the Underworld" or "The Gates of Hell". It is located 90 km from the village of Erbent. It is a chasm of artificial origin caused by an accident in 1971, when a drilling carried out with the aim of looking for oil caused the ground to collapse and opened an escape route for natural gas, which was voluntarily set on fire to avoid worse environmental consequences . Since then the crater has been burning continuously.
