Chichén Itzá is an important Mayan archaeological complex located in Mexico, in the north of the Yucatán peninsula. The ruins, which extend over an area of 3 km², belonged to a large city that was one of the most important centers of the region around the epiclassical period of the Mayan civilization, between the 6th and 11th centuries. The site includes numerous buildings, representative of different architectural styles; among the most famous we can indicate the pyramid of Kukulkan (known as El Castillo), the astronomical observatory (the Caracol) and the Temple of the warriors. The Chichén Itzá site was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988
