The Grand Canal (for the Venetians also Canalazzo, or, in Veneto, El Canalasso) is the main canal of Venice. About 3800 meters long (width from 30 to 70 m, average depth 5 m), it divides the historic center into two parts, tracing an inverted "S", which goes from the junction of the Ponte della Libertà to the San Marco Basin. It is flanked along its entire length by magnificent buildings, mostly from the 12th to 18th centuries, which manifest the wealth and art created by the Republic of Venice, making it one of the symbols of the city. Every year the Venetians relive the centuries-old traditions of the Serenissima, such as the Historical Regatta.
