Sa Pa is a quiet mountain town and home to a great diversity of ethnic minority peoples. The total population of 36,000 consists mainly of minority groups. Most of the inhabitants work their land on sloping terraces, where rice and corn are mainly grown.

With sub-tropical summers, mild winters and 160 foggy days per year, the influence climate has on agricultural yields and health issues is significant.
