Porta Borsari is an imposing gate in the Roman walls of Verona. Its construction dates back to the first century after Christ, and, in the imperial era, it was the main entrance to the city. The Porta Borsari led into Verona via Postumia which at the time connected the Tyrrhenian Sea with the Adriatic Sea. In Roman times it was called Porta Iovia due to the presence of the nearby temple dedicated to Jupiter Lustral. In the Middle Ages it assumed the name of Porta di San Zeno, while the current name refers to the Borsari, i.e. the soldiers on guard duty who collected the bishop's duties.
