In 1970 the Vancouver Foundation, the provincial government of British Columbia and the city of Vancouver signed an agreement to fund the development of a public garden, the VanDusen Botanical Garden. This botanical park is located in the Shaughnessy neighborhood of Vancouver, and is named after local Whitford lumberjack and philanthropist Julian VanDusen.
The garden covers 22 hectares, and in addition to displays of plants from around the world, there is an extensive collection of plants native to British Columbia (Northwest Coast). A re-wilding awareness program was recently introduced, with the goal of saving and increasing the number of native plants for reintroduction into Vancouver Regional Parks.
