The Vancouver Aquarium opened to the public on June 15, 1956 thanks, in part, to a financial aid of 100,000 dollars offered by Baron H.R. MacMillan and entrepreneur George Cunningham. The Vancouver Aquarium is Canada's first official Aquarium and is also one of the five largest aquariums in the North American Territory.
It covers an area of about nine thousand square meters and is home to over 70,000 aquatic animals. The aquarium, open 365 days a year, employs 355 employees and 890 active volunteers, and has been visited by more than thirty million people since its opening. In addition to being a major attraction for tourists, it is also a marine research, conservation and rehabilitation center for marine animal species.
