The Carso, also known as Carsico plateau or Carsia (Kras in Slovenian and Croatian, Cjars in Friulian) is a rocky limestone plateau, belonging to the Dinaric Alps, which extends between north-eastern Italy (Venezia-Giulia, province of Gorizia and Trieste), Slovenia and Croatia, starting from the foothills of the Julian Pre-Alps to the Adriatic Sea, south-east of the Collio area, then continuing in western Slovenia and northern Istria, up to the massif of the Bebie Alps (Velebit) at extreme northwest of Croatia. Historically known for having been the scene of violent battles during the First World War, it can be divided into the Trieste Karst, the Gorizia Karst and the Slovenian Karst.
