The Basovizza foiba is a sinkhole located in Basovizza, in the municipality of Trieste, in the north-eastern area of the Carso plateau at an altitude of 377 metres. An unknown number of people were thrown into this foiba by the Yugoslav partisans during the period of the Yugoslav occupation of Trieste. A monument has been placed near this place in memory of all the victims of the massacres. In 1992 the President of the Italian Republic Oscar Luigi Scalfaro declared the well a national monument.
