Tsukiji Wholesale Fish Market (Japanese: 築地市場, Tsukiji shijō) is the largest fish market in the world. It is located in Tokyo, in the Tsukiji district, and covers a vast area, of artificial origin, obtained from a landfill. The number of people who work there in various shifts ranges from 60,000 to 65,000, including accredited vendors, administrative staff and workers. It consists of two sectors: the first, the so-called internal market (jonai shijo) where tuna auctions are held and wholesalers operate; the second so-called external market (jogai shijo), where a whole series of commercial activities take place such as the sale of small fish, portioned, processed, dried, preserved fish and so on.
