Wat Phra Sri Sanphet is the holiest temple in the Royal Palace of the ancient capital Ayutthaya. In 1767, the Burmese began a large-scale looting and destruction of the temples and other buildings present, including Wat Phra Sri Sanphet. About 2 centuries later, the temple was restored, becoming the largest and most grandiose temple in the ancient capital, so much so that it was used as a model to create the new royal temple: Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok.
Wat Phra Sri Sanphet was the temple of the royal family, so no monks lived there and it was used exclusively for royal ceremonies.
