The most important of Phuket's 29 Buddhist temples is Wat Chalong, also called Wat Chaiyathararam . It is located in Chalong Subdistrict, Mueang Phuket District. It is dedicated to two very venerable monks, Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang, who led the citizens of Chalong Subdistrict in the fight against the Chinese rebellion in 1876 and with their knowledge of herbal medicine helped the wounded. Currently, a market is held near the Wat Chalong temple, selling souvenirs to tourists.
