The Roman Forum, one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. This large area between the Campidoglio and the Quirinale, reclaimed by Tarquinius the Superbus, already starting from the 6th century BC. it was destined to welcome the markets and the public life of the city. Forum was the term used by the Romans to indicate the central square where the administrative, legal, commercial and religious functions of the city were carried out.
Crossed by the 'Via Sacra', the Roman Forum, in the imperial era, kept its initial structure almost unchanged. The only exceptions were the construction of the temple of Antoninus and Faustina, in a marginal position, and the construction of some honorary monuments, the most important of which was the arch of Septimius Severus. After the Renaissance - starting from which the ancient areas were plundered or used as gigantic material quarries - the area was once again abandoned, until the definitive process of recovering the antiquities began in the eighteenth century which brought to light, especially starting from the excavations systematics of the nineteenth century, this immense patrimony barbarously plundered and forgotten for centuries.
