The Nazca lines are geoglyphs, lines drawn on the ground, of the Nazca desert, an arid plateau that extends for about eighty kilometers. The geoglyphs are believed to have been drawn during the heyday of the Nazca Civilization, between 300 BC and 300 BC. and 500 AD. by the population living in the area. The lines are drawn by removing stones containing iron oxides from the desert surface, thus leaving a contrast with the lighter rubble underneath.
In this area there are over 13,000 lines, which form more than 800 drawings of stylized animals. The best known are: a whale, a lizard more than 180 meters long, a hummingbird, a condor and a huge spider about 45 meters long.
