The Huascarán National Park is a protected natural area located in the department of Ancash, in central Peru. The park includes almost all of the Cordillera Blanca, a portion of the central Andes in which there are numerous peaks above 6,000 metres, such as Mount Huascarán itself, which gives its name to the park and which, with its 6,768 metres, is the highest mountain in the planet within the tropical zone. The park was established in 1975, and in 1985 it was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Huascaran National Park has an area of 340,000 km2 and extends 158 km in length from south to north, with an average width of 20 km. Inside there are 663 glaciers, more than 200 mountains, 296 lakes and 44 rivers.
