Huancayo is a city in central Peru, capital of the Junín region. The city is located on the Andes cordillera, in the center of the fertile Mantaro valley, and is known for its characteristic handicraft market. Huancayo is located in the territory once occupied by the Huancas population, subdued by the Incas in the 15th century. The Spanish conquered this area in 1534, and its foundation as a city dates back to June 1, 1572.
