Lima is the capital and most populous city of Peru, as well as the second most populous city in South America after São Paulo. The city of Lima was founded by Francisco Pizarro on January 18, 1535 with the name of Ciudad de los Reyes (City of Kings). To date, Lima is considered the cultural, industrial and financial center of the entire South American state. In the 2015 census the population, continuously growing, was 9752653 inhabitants.
