Svalbard (in Italian also Svalbarde) are an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, and are the northernmost part of Norway. The name Svalbard means cold coast in Italian, this is because most of these islands are covered by ice. The islands cover an area of 62 050 km². The largest islands are Spitsbergen (39 000 km²), Nordaustlandet (14 600 km²) and Edgeøya (5 000 km²). The climate of the Svalbard islands is polar in the interior, while it is similar to the tundra on the coast with lows in winter that even reach values of −40 °C and highs in summer that can rise up to 5-6 °C.
