The Oslo Opera House is the home of Den Norske Opera & Ballett, and is the national opera house of Norway. Construction of the theater began in 2003 and finished in 2008, with the opening gala evening featuring several prominent figures from Norway and beyond. With a total area of 38,500 m², the theater houses around 1100 rooms inside. The Opera House won the culture prize in October 2008, and the 2009 European Union prize for contemporary architecture.
