After Spitsbergen, Senja is Norway's second largest island. The word Senja recalls the Norse verb sundr which means "separate", and from a geographical point of view this meaning is fitting since there are numerous fjords, bays, inlets, lakes and ponds on the island which make the territory fragmented by water. Despite this, the island is still inhabited by about 7700 inhabitants and is home to the Ånderdalen National Park.
