Founded in 1930 by millionaire sculptor and collector Gertrude Vandelbilt Whitney, the Whitney Museum of American Art houses the largest collection of 20th-century American art.
An imposing building of reinforced concrete and gray granite houses the 5 floors of this museum. Structure designed by the Hungarian architect Marcel Breuer and inaugurated in 1966. Only one of the 5 floors of the museum displays a permanent exhibition, including the famous works of Edward Hopper and various paintings by Kooning, Demuth and Andy Warhol.
