Blutenburg Castle is a ducal hunting castle located west of Munich, between two branches of the Würm river, in the district of Pasing-Obermenzing.
The castle was built in 1438-39 for Duke Albert III of Bavaria of the Wittelsbach family, son of Elisabetta Visconti. His son Sigismund of Bavaria ordered an extension of the castle in 1488 and died there in 1501. It was he who ordered the construction of the castle church, a masterpiece in the late Gothic style which has preserved the original stained glass windows. Next to the high altar are three paintings by Jan Polack dating back to 1491. The castle was badly damaged during the Thirty Years War but was rebuilt in 1680-81. The castle is still surrounded by a wall with four towers.
