After Marienplatz, Stachus is the best known and most popular square in Munich. The oldest part is the fourteenth-century Karlstor, one of the gates that delimited the first nucleus of the city. Although its real name is Karlsplatz, the Munichers call this square Stachus.
The origin of the "popular" name takes us back to Eustachius Föderl, owner of the "Zum Eustachius" inn which stood roughly where the Kaufhof department store is today, while the official name pays homage to the Elector Karl-Theodor.
