The Englischer Garten, or English Garden, is a large public city park that extends from the center to the north-eastern edge of the city of Munich in Germany.
The park created in 1789 by Benjamin Thompson, also known as "Earl of Rumford" (in German Reichsgraf von Rumford) and redesigned in 1807 by Friedrich Ludwig Von Sckell according to the landscape style. With its total extension of 3.7 km², the Englischer Garten is one of the largest urban public parks in the world, larger than the famous Central Park in New York but less extensive than the Phoenix Park in Dublin, which is the largest in Europe. Its name refers to the style in which it was made. The term English garden is used to mean a type of garden developed in the 17th century which is based on the apparently informal alternation of natural and artificial elements which compose the landscape of the garden itself.
