The church of the Madonna delle Vergini is a small chapel which the inhabitants of Matera are very fond of: it is the only one of the rock churches to still be open for worship, and it is also the destination of a large pilgrimage on the last Sunday of May, on the occasion of the feast of the Virgin. It can be easily reached via a path which, starting from Porta Pistola, crosses the stream and leads to the other side of the Gravina.
