The crypt of the Original Sin is a rock church in Matera: for its cycle of frescoes it is defined as the Sistine Chapel of the rock. It is a cave used as a church in the 9th century BC. by the Benedictine monks, completely frescoed by the skilful hand of the "Painter of the flowers of Matera". Rediscovered back in May 1963 by a group of young enthusiasts from Matera, the Crypt of the Original Sin from a shelter for flocks has become one of the unmissable stops on a visit to the City of Stones.
